BIOGRAPHY

With an M.D. from the Department of Modern Languages at the University of São Paulo and currently undertaking a Ph.D. in the same university, Alexandre is a playwright, director, and author. Nominated for the most important Brazilian awards, his plays have been performed all over the country and also abroad. With Matthew, 10 (2012) he won the Shell Award as Best Playwright. He was nominated for several awards with the plays Abnegation III – Wrecks (Aplauso Brasil Awards, finalist), Abnegation 1 (APCA Award, 2014, edited in France by Les Solitaires Intempestifs), and The Son (APCA Award, 2016). In 2017 he premiered at MITsp the play WHITE: The smell of lillies and formaldehyde. His play Abnegation III was produced in Buenos Aires by director Lisandro Rodrigues and had a 10-month run there. Abnegation 1 was produced in Paris at the Monfort Theater with wide public and critical acceptance. He had texts translated and edited abroad, as in Argentina, Portugal, Germany, and France, and his plays took part in all the important festivals in Brazil, as well as abroad, such as FIBA 2019, FITEI 2017, FITEI 2019, FITEI 2020 (participation postponed to 2021 due to Covid19). In 2021, the play Reconciliation, created in partnership with the Portuguese artist Patricia Portela, will debut at FITEI (Porto, Portugal).

            In 2013 he released his first novel, A Guidebook for Destruction, published by Hedra. Alexander served as a writing and theater professor in the most important theater schools of Brazil, besides teaching at PUC-SP. He worked with several of the most important Brazilian and foreign theater groups and directors, such as Teatro da Vertigem, Grupo XIX de Teatro and Luiz Fernando Marques, Eric Lenate, Grupo Bagaceira (Fortaleza), Lisandro Rodriguez (ARG), Tillman Köhler (Germany), Guillaume Durieux (France), Patrícia Portela (Portugal), Pedro Vilela (Recife), among others. He is now working on his next play, Truth, and his next novel Youngs.
